Patents and copyrights are specifically mentioned in the Constitution as having to expire. Congress keeps extending copyrights - mostly to protect Mickey Mouse (his ears) - without reviewing the constitutional issues.
Patents are devolving into lawsuits and preditory pricing. Nor has the Patent office been funded enough to check patents against prior art.
